Temperature Based Dialogue in the Duke Programming Tutor
نویسنده
چکیده
The Duke Programming Tutor is a multi-modal dialogue system designed to help novice Computer Science students write, debug and understand simple programs. In this paper, we describe the architecture of this system at a high level, and present and analyze results from a preliminary test with students. A temperature based dialogue algorithm is proposed in order to improve the modeling of tutorial dialogue and system robustness. We then describe a version of this algorithm that has been integrated into the Duke Programming Tutor. 1 Communicating with Computers If we wish to work with friends or colleagues to carry out a joint task, such as studying or scheduling, we usually prefer to use voice as the primary mode of the collaboration. However, on the computers that we work with every day, few systems attempt to integrate voice as anything but an afterthought to interactions. The most common commercial voice systems are dictation systems and voice command systems for short cuts in windowing environments. Neither of these tasks are particularly collaboratory{the computer is generally a passive participant. There have been several research systems built that have used voice as a primary means of communication. The TRAINS project Allen et al., 1995] studies planning in a train scheduling domain as the topic of human-computer dialogues. The TRAINS system focuses on understanding the details of language used in dialogue, but it is not their primary goal to produce a real-time 1

Using Bigrams to Identify Relationships Between Student Certainness States and Tutor Responses in a Spoken Dialogue Corpus
We use n-gram techniques to identify dependencies between student affective states of certainty and subsequent tutor dialogue acts, in an annotated corpus of human-human spoken tutoring dialogues. We first represent our dialogues as bigrams of annotated student and tutor turns. We next use χ analysis to identify dependent bigrams. Our results show dependencies between many student states and su...
متن کاملAdapting to Personality Over Time: Examining the Effectiveness of Dialogue Policy Progressions in Task-Oriented Interaction
This paper explores dialogue adaptation over repeated interactions within a taskoriented human tutorial dialogue corpus. We hypothesize that over the course of four tutorial dialogue sessions, tutors adapt their strategies based on the personality of the student, and in particular to student introversion or extraversion. We model changes in strategy over time and use them to predict how effecti...
متن کاملSeeing the Face and Observing the Actions: The Effects of Nonverbal Cues on Mediated Tutoring Dialogue
Mediated communication technologies, conveying verbal and nonverbal cues, are more and more employed in learning activities. Nevertheless, their effects on teacher-student interaction have been not clearly stated yet. Through two experimental studies, we investigated on the effects of nonverbal communication cues (kinesic and ostensive-inferential) on synchronous mediated tutoring dialogue, in ...
متن کاملDelivering Hints in a Dialogue-Based Intelligent Tutoring System
Hinting is an important tutoring tactic in one-on-one tutoring, used when the tutor needs to respond to an unexpected answer from the student. To issue a follow-up hint that is pedagogically helpful and conversationally smooth, the tutor needs to suit the hinting strategy to the student’s need while making the strategy fit the high level tutoring plan and the tutoring context. This paper descri...
متن کاملAn Approach to Increasing Programming Efficiency in Plan-Based Dialogue Systems
In this paper we use software engineering criteria to evaluate possible changes to a dialogue-based ITS. We have developed a prototype ITS, CAPE, that uses the APE reactive planning system as a platform for developing a small ITS based on CIRCSIM-Tutor, an existing medical tutor. CAPE primitives are untyped, like relations in a Prolog program, and can include elements of discourse, domain and p...
